pain-lost-to-time-original-oil-painting
"Pain Lost to Time" Original Oil Painting

At first glance she seams at peace. Then you notice shes under the surface of some kind of water thanks to the flower petals and Lilly pads. Once your up close you see the snakes wrapped around the poor girl. It is in that moment you might recognize Medusa. Over the years Medusa has been portrayed time and time again in the role of the monster. She originated as such in the Greek myths, most popularly the one of her death. They didn't even bother to give her much of a backstory. But in Romen times, even though she was still marked as a monster, she was given a past. In her origin story she started out as a very beautiful women who was a Priestess of Athena. She was so beautiful in fact, that she caught the attention of Poseidon (who doesn't get along with Athena at all). When he got tired of rejection, because to be a Priestess of Athena you had to swear an oath to remain a maiden like the Goddess had, Poseidon decided to take what he wanted from Medusa on the floor of the Goddess's temple. This story has many different details biased on where you look. However, Medusa has lived on into modern society as a symbol to though who have experienced and survived sexual assault.

I chose to portray her as if she were sleeping under the ripples of a river or pond because I wanted to try and find a moment of peace for her between being assaulted, transformed, banished, hunted, and murdered. A moment where she was struggling to try to heal and find a new sense of self between everything she had lived through up to that point. Because that's what healing feels like sometimes; sleeping under the water. I imagine that she still adorns herself in the priestess clothes of her Goddess even in her banishment just to have a sense of who she was before. Because healing feels like racing yourself to a past version of you at times. Healing is all of these battles that you are fighting within yourself, just under the surface.

Medium(s): Oil paint, Calligraphy ink

Dimensions (inches): 20" x 10" x 0.5"
